Pundit: This may be 'real' reason Nuno sacked by Tottenham

Tottenham fans could have been the reason behind Nuno Espirito Santo’s sacking after they “made up their mind” on him, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the fans will have been “squarely against” the 47-year-old after his “strange” decisions in recent weeks.

Yesterday, this site broke the news of Tottenham deciding to sack Nuno after just 10 Premier League matches in charge.

Today the news was confirmed by the club, with Football Insider revealing that Spurs are in “advanced talks” with Antonio Conte about the vacancy.

Fan disgruntlement at performances under Nuno reached boiling point during Tottenham’s 3-0 home defeat against Manchester United.

The decision to substitute Lucas Moura, one of the bright sparks during the game, on 54 minutes was met with widespread boos and disapproving chants.

Whelan insisted Tottenham supporters were justified in their criticism, claiming Nuno was “not the manager they wanted”.

“They had to do it before it was too late,” he told Football Insider.

“You could see the fans were angered, and rightly so, it was a terrible performance from Tottenham.

“There were question marks about taking Lucas Moura off, who was one of the players who was looking to turn the game around.

“Nuno was making some really strange, bad decisions and that will have put the fans squarely against him – and they can get you the sack.

“The Tottenham fans made their mind up – he was not the manager they wanted.”

Nuno leaves Spurs 10 points off leaders Chelsea after 10 matches.

The departed boss lasted 124 days in the post, the 12th-shortest reign in the history of the Premier League.
