Pundit thrilled by Antony transformation amid Man United source's reveal

Noel Whelan has hailed Antony’s impact with the Man United players now “working hard and playing for the badge again” after Erik ten Hag’s arrival.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 22-year-old justifies his price tag by “putting the hard yards in going backwards” as well as his flair play in attack.

According to The Sun (10 September), Antony has already “endeared himself” to his Man United colleagues with his tenacious and hard-working performances.

The newspaper quotes an Old Trafford source as saying the Brazillian is “100% on it” during training and matches, and compared him to “a Tasmanian devil”.

The £85million star has also made a big impression on the pitch, scoring a well-taken goal in the first half of Man United’s win over Arsenal last week (4 September).

Antony will play for Brazil in friendlies against Ghana and Tunisia later this month, ahead of the World Cup in Qatar this winter.

Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Everyone knew that Man United had to try harder and run further this season.

“They were walking around the pitch last season.

“Big players like Antony have cost a lot of money – and this sort of thing is why. Not only is he good going forward, he puts the hard yards in going backwards as well.

“It’s a team game, and this is what Ten Hag will expect from him. That’s why he went all-out to get him in.

“He knows what he got from him at Ajax, and he’ll be expecting the same at Man United.

“It’s an example of players working hard for the manager and playing for that badge again.

“Now we’re talking about the positives of players, and that work rate – and bar the Europa League game, they’re getting results. They couldn’t afford to keep going how they were last season.”
