Pundit thrilled by Leeds 'boost' after Bielsa dressing room reveal

Leeds United gave themselves a “psychological boost” after climbing out of the Premier League drop zone on Sunday, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Whites striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, showered praise on Marcelo Bielsa and his players for their “response” to falling into the bottom three on Saturday.

As quoted by Leeds Live (2nd November), Bielsa suggested there has been somewhat of a crisis of confidence in the Whites dressing room because of recent results.

Leeds United restored their three-point cushion to 17th-place Burnley with a 2-1 away win against basement club Norwich on Sunday, with goals from Rodrigo and Raphinha ensuring victory.

Leeds United have struggled with an injury crisis of late. Patrick Bamford, Junior Firpo, and Luke Ayling are among those still absent.

When asked about the impact of emerging from the relegation zone at the first time of asking, Whelan told Football Insider: “It’s a real psychological boost.

“Being in the bottom three can really dent your confidence and your belief. It’s not nice when you wake up in the morning and you’re in those relegation places.

“It’s crucial that we keep ourselves ahead of the bottom three, because even if it’s momentarily that you’re in the drop zone – it’s not a nice feeling.

“The players knew what was at stake before the Norwich game, which we knew wasn’t going to be easy off the back of their absolute thrashing against Chelsea.

“Bielsa and the players responded in the right way. It was by no means a vintage performance but we got the three points, and that’s more important.”

Leeds United have won just twice this season.

The Yorkshire club take on Leicester City next.
