Noel Whelan has told Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa to start Stuart Dallas on the right-hand side of midfield instead of Helder Costa against Everton if Raphinha is ruled out.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Whites striker and boyhood Elland Road fan slaughtered Costa for his 10-minute cameo against Leicester City at the weekend.
The 26-year-old replaced Raphinha at the King Power Stadium and Marcelo Bielsa revealed at his pre-match media conference on Monday the Brazilian is a doubt for Wednesday evening’s game.
Asked by Football Insider whether Costa could be set to start a Premier League game for the first time since November, Whelan said: “Yes, possibly he could be nailed on for a start.
“But you could also move Stuart Dallas to that right-hand side and bring Mateusz Klich back in.
“There are many different options that Marcelo Bielsa can go with.
“At the minute, I’m not seeing anything from Helder Costa that’s saying to me he’s going to put in a good performance. He’s been massively disappointing.
“He started the season off really well but since he’s been sitting on the bench we’ve seen no reaction from him and no quality from him.
“Again when he came on [against Leicester] you only have to do the basics and he couldn’t even get that right. His first three touches were a foul, giving the ball away and miscontrolling it.
“Now, to me, they’re not great signs. Can we trust him? That’s the big question.
“If he is playing out there he needs to put in a sterling performance because there are many doubters out there and he cost us a lot of money.”
Dallas has started every Premier League game this season and has operated in his natural position of central midfield and as both a left and right full-back.
