Pundit View: ‘We need to keep an eye’ on West Ham potentially signing Costa
West Ham may sign free agent Diego Costa to provide cover for Michail Antonio and he could be a “short-term fix until the end of the season”, according to Kevin Campbell.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal striker, who works as a pundit for La Liga TV on weekly basis, told fans to “keep an eye” on the 32-year-old’s situation but also warned that he is “not the player he once was.”
The Hammers were on the hunt for a striker in the January transfer window following the departure of club-record signing Sebastien Haller to Ajax.
Moves for Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri and RB Leipzig’s Hwang Hee-chan failed to materialise before deadline day to leave David Moyes with just one recognised striker in Michail Antonio.
However, the club could still enter the free agent market for a solution, with ex-Chelsea striker Diego Costa available following the termination of his contract at Atletico Madrid.
When asked if the Spain international would be welcome addition at the London Stadium, Campbell told Football Insider:
“Costa could provide a short term fix until the end of the season.
“He is a free agent so they could do the business at any time. I am sure that this is one that we need to keep an eye on.
“But it has to be said that Diego Costa is not the player he once was.”
