Pundit 'wowed' by Newcastle pursuit of Schick after source's update

Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick would be “an upgrade” on the current strikers at Newcastle United, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Tottenham and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the 25-year-old would be “an exciting signing” as he is “proven” at club and international level.

The Magpies are in the market for strikers this month after Callum Wilson was ruled out for eight weeks through injury.

Chris Wood is set to put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half year contract at St. James’ Park after his £25million release clause at Burnley was activated.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider (12 January) that the club have set their sights on another striker signing, likely on loan.

According to Sky Sports‘ Keith Downie (10 January), Czech Republic international Patrik Schick is on a list of potential targets.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Schick, Robinson said: “Wow, now he’d be an exciting signing.

“He’d be an upgrade on what they’ve currently got, that’s for sure. Whoever Newcastle bring in this January they have to be an improvement on the current crop of players and Schick is definitely that.

“It’s imperative they add goals to their squad with Wilson out for such a length of time.

“Schick has proven that he can score goals at club and international level.

“Newcastle are in such a perilous position. The only way they are going to get out of it is by buying their way out of it.

“The difficulty is attracting top players like Shick. You can offer them a great financial package but do they want to come and be in a relegation battle.”
