Isn’t it about time questions were asked about what is going on under Rafa Benitez?

It seems that the Spanish boss can seemingly do no wrong at St James’ Park despite the miserable position the club find themselves in.

Hovering gingerly above the Premier League’s relegation zone, they face the very real prospect of a return to the Championship after only returning to the English top-flight last summer.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has been slaughtered in the media for the way he complained to the media about transfers or lack-of, but when Rafa pulled a similar trick, the whole world felt sorry for him.

There are many things wrong at St James’ Park, not least their owner Mike Ashley, but does the Spaniard not share any of the responsibility for the issues at the club, particularly when it comes to transfers?

The signing of Islam Slimani from Leicester City in the winter window was one decision that boggles the mind.

Desperate for goals, they opted to sign a crocked Algerian, who shows no sign of rolling off the injury table anytime soon and Kenedy, who has made little difference to the threat in attack.

Benitez’ persistence with Dwight Gayle in attack is infuriating – and the five goals he has registered in all competitions for the club is shockingly poor.

That leads to the decision to allow Aleksandar Mitrovic a move to Fulham in the January transfer window, which now seems a very poor one given his recent goalfest.

Newcastle fans loved him but he was never given a solid run by Benitez and he’s now scored five goals in seven for promotion chasing Fulham.

His is the kind of fire in the belly spirit the Magpies could do with right now and it’s not inconceivable that he could push Fulham to promotion as Newcastle sink back to the Championship.

Questions need to be asked.
