Ralf Rangnick slammed after Man United transfer reveal - pundit

Noel Whelan has slammed “yet more excuses” coming out of Man United after Ralf Rangnick revealed he was denied a striker during the January window.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed a new forward would not “have changed anything” at Old Trafford.

As per the BBC (6 May), Rangnick claimed he was refused the opportunity to sign a striker during the final two days of the winter window.

The German reflected on the decision, suggesting he should have “pushed even harder” to get a deal over the line.

First-choice Cristiano Ronaldo has netted 24 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions.

Whelan suggested any top player would have rejected an approach from Man United outright due to their poor performance.

“I don’t think one player would have changed anything,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“They’re not going to be picking from the top strikers. The best players simply wouldn’t have wanted to go to Man United.

“They’re nowhere near Liverpool and Man City.

“Look, Ronaldo isn’t a bad centre-forward to have, is he? He’s been banging in goals for them, so let’s not start whinging about that.

“It’s yet more excuses coming out of the club. A striker wouldn’t have changed anything – they’re weak, they don’t work hard enough – and that’s easy to see.”

Man United sit sixth in the Premier League and could slip into the Europa Conference League next season if results go against them during the run-in.

Rangnick is set to make way for Ajax boss Erik ten Hag next season – with the Dutchman expected to oversee a major overhaul.
