Rangers’ £16m injection is ‘last chance’ to match Celtic – Keith Wyness

Rangers must seize the chance to close the gap on Celtic after the club announced they intend to raise £16million.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen, Aston Villa, and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, as Rangers will create a new share issue to invest in the squad.

The move confirms the club’s stance to back manager Danny Rohl, with the Gers in prime position to win this season’s Scottish Premiership title.

A title win would give Rangers the chance to become the only Scottish team in the Champions League next season, which would boost matchday and broadcast revenue.

Rangers remain behind Celtic financially, but on-pitch success could cut that gap and end the Hoops’ dominance in Scottish football over the past decade.

Rangers announcement is ‘big push forward’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Rangers must compete with Celtic now on and off the pitch.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks it was the “right time” for Rangers to make the financial investment.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Rangers are making a big push forward now, and they’ve got to get this right, because this will be the last chance really to go to the well for resources like this.

“They know that Celtic are sitting there with a big bank balance, which has always been what the fans have moaned about, but still Rangers have to be there and compete now.

“With Danny Rohl, they seem to have found a manager that the fans are starting to get behind and believe in.

“So it probably is the right time to try and give it a go now if Rangers can get it stable behind the scenes and give Rohl the resources to actually execute a properly thought-through strategic plan.”

Rangers plot new transfer strategy

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Rangers will look to sign Scottish talent as part of their long-term strategy in the transfer market.

The move could be beneficial to the Scottish national team, although Rangers would face competition from Celtic and English clubs for the brightest prospects.

The Glasgow club currently have their eye on Scottish players like David Watson and Luke Graham ahead of possible moves this summer.
