‘Rangers accelerate Steven Gerrard return after new manager latest’

Rangers are set to step up their efforts to bring Steven Gerrard back to Ibrox as they approach the end of Barry Ferguson’s spell as interim boss.

That is according to former Man United chief scout and Sir Alex Ferguson number two Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 44-year-old is still very highly thought-of in Glasgow.

No decision has been made yet, but Rangers are keen to bring in their next manager quickly and ensure they are given a full transfer window and pre-season to operate.

This comes after Football Insider revealed on 3 May that Gerrard is the leading candidate for Rangers ahead of the likes of Marco Rose.

His previous spell at Rangers saw him lead them to their most recent SPFL title in 2021 without losing a single league game as they picked up 102 points over 38 games.

Brown told Football Insider following Philippe Clement’s dismissal that Gerrard has maintained strong connections at Ibrox and is interested in a return.

Steven Gerrard update emerges as Rangers decision looms

Brown first told Football Insider in November Gerrard has opened the door to re-join Rangers and has admirers in the boardroom.

Now, the former scout who has a wealth of experience working closely with elite-level managers including the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and Ron Atkinson for over a decade at Man United, has insisted the Liverpool legend remains a top target.

I’m always a little bit concerned when players or managers go back,” he told Football Insider.

“But Gerrard is very well thought-of in Glasgow and he’s very well-connected in the game.

“That will give Rangers a boost, like we saw the first time he was there, in the transfer market which could be key for them when the window opens.

“From what I hear, they want to get their next manager in quickly after the season ends.

“They want to give a full pre-season and transfer window to avoid any disruption.

“If Gerrard is the one they want, it should be relatively simple because he’s already out of work.

“It’s going to be difficult for Rangers, though, because it’s difficult to be sure how much they’ll be able to spend even with new owners.

“They’ve got a big job on their hands just to challenge Celtic because there’s a big gap in quality there.

“So I can see Gerrard going back, he’s definitely one of the targets, but they need a clear direction and clear path to go and improve.”

Danny Rohl emerges as new candidate at Ibrox

While Gerrard remains among the leading candidates for the Ibrox role, a number of other options are being considered as they aim to make progress.

Brown told Football Insider that Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is on Rangers’ list and could be tempted to leave the Championship side this summer.

The boss’ performances in the Championship have attracted interest from a number of clubs after guiding them to 12th despite pre-season fears of relegation.

Meanwhile, Brown told Football Insider on 7 April that Rohl could quit Sheffield Wednesday amid growing concerns about Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.
