Rangers defender David Bates has revealed the reason he has agreed a four-year deal with German giants Hamburg – admitting it was an opportunity he doesn’t think “anyone could turn down.”
Bates will join the Germans in the summer after two years at Ibrox but could find himself plying his trade in Germany’s second tier if HSV fail to avoid relegation.
The defender called his new side “iconic” in a lengthy Twitter post as he thanked everyone at Rangers after the deal was announced.
“After a whirlwind 48 hours I am absolutely delighted to have my future sorted,” Bates said on his personal Twitter account.
“Like Rangers, HSV are iconic club with tremendous history and all the pressures that come with that.
“They have given me a lot of faith in their recruitment and I can’t wait to kick on and develop further as a player.
“It was an opportunity I don’t think anyone could turn down.
“I’d like to thank all the fans, staff and board for the last two years.
“Hopefully I can get back fit enough to help in some way to finish as high as possible.”
Bates has made 17 appearances for the Gers this season, making 25 in total, but is currently sidelined with an ankle injury sustained in the 3-2 Old Firm defeat last month.
The defender joined the Gers in August 2016 on a development loan from Raith Rovers before agreeing a permanent switch to Ibrox the following January.
After making his first-team bow shortly afterwards, Bates remained on the fringes of the first-team until December when he replaced Bruno Alves in the 0-0 Old Firm draw at Celtic Park.
Bates would establish himself as first-choice central defender until injury took him out of the side last month.
Football Insider verdict:
Fair play to Bates. Not many British players take the gamble of moving abroad and sampling a new culture and footballing environment and it will undoubtedly be something that will help the defender improve. While it’s not a massive loss for the Gers, it will be an interesting opportunity for the 21-year-old to prove himself somewhere different and become a better player for it. Still, the whole thing is just a little bit surreal.
