Rangers: Andreas Skov Olsen £8m permanent deal in jeopardy as Danny Rohl pressure mounts
Rangers face a major decision over the £8m permanent signing of Andreas Skov Olsen as the club’s Champions League hopes hang in the balance and Danny Rohl remains under pressure to keep his job.
Skov Olsen has not quite hit the heights expected of him since a January loan move to Rangers from Wolfsburg.
The Gers hold an £8million option-to-buy the 26-year-old in his temporary contract, but are yet to be convinced by his performances since the switch.
As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Rangers need to qualify for the Champions League to be able to afford such a fee to sign him permanently.
Rangers’ transfer plans are set to hinge on where they finish in the Premiership this season, with a big push needed to finish in the top two and make the UCL qualification stage.

Olsen has 40 caps for his country and has played regularly in Serie A, the Belgian Pro League and the Bundesliga, but is yet to prove his quality in the Scottish Premiership.
He has scored once and assisted two goals in eight appearances so far, but needs to do more to earn a permanent move to the club in the summer.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “He came with a lot of fanfare following his January arrival. He was a big signing for Rangers when they got him on loan from Wolfsburg with an option to buy for around £8 million.
“It’s a big fee for Rangers to pay for him if they do want to make that move a permanent deal. He has struggled, there is no getting away from that, with one goal and two assists in eight appearances.
“Obviously if Rangers want to sign him, ideally, they’re to qualify for the Champions League next season. They’ll have more money to spend on players.
“If Skov Olsen helps them achieve that goal of qualifying for the Champions League, then there might be more willingness to try and make that deal permanent. He’s under contract at Wolfsburg until 2029, so they will be demanding that high fee.
“Rangers right now will be hoping that he can get back to form and enjoy a strong end to the season and then come the end of the season then they’ll make a decision on what they want to do with him.”
Danny Rohl is under serious pressure at Rangers
Rangers not only need to finish the season well to help them spend money this summer, but manager Rohl is also fighting for his future at the club just five months on from being appointed.
He has not been able to turn them into genuine title contenders as yet, while the Gers were recently dumped out of the Europa League and the Scottish Cup.
Sources have told Football Insider that Rohl is under real pressure at Rangers, but there are no immediate plans to relieve him of his duties.
Their recent cup loss to Celtic has ramped up the pressure on him to deliver in the league, though, and a trophyless season could well see him sacked before the summer window even begins.
