Rangers backed to agree Connor Barron deal after ‘swoop’ – expert

Rangers have been tipped to complete the signing of Connor Barron from Aberdeen despite competition from European sides.

Barron, 21, will leave Aberdeen upon the expiry of his contract on 30 June and Philippe Clement’s side are poised to swoop for the free transfer.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Gers defender Alan Hutton warned that they will face competition from clubs in Italy after the success of Scottish nationals who have previously made the move.

Lewis Ferguson made the switch from Aberdeen to Bologna in 2022 and helped them to a fifth-placed finish last season as he was named the Serie A Midfielder of the Season.

As a result, Hutton suggested Barron could be tempted to follow in the footsteps of his former clubmate, but insisted Rangers still have the edge in the race.

Rangers tipped to win race to sign Connor Barron from Aberdeen

Rangers have targetted young players so far this summer after the arrivals of Clinton Nsiala and Jefte and the extension of Oscar Cortes’ loan, with all three aged just 20.

Barron would be the latest on that list, and after making 42 appearances for Aberdeen last season, Hutton has insisted working under Clement will help him develop his game further.

Again it’s another deal on a free,” he told Football Insider.

That’s something Rangers have liked to do. He knows the league, he’s played a lot of football and he’s an under-21 international.

He’s showed a lot of promise and that will be good for Rangers going forward.

This is the direction that they’re going in. We’re signing a 21-year-old player who the manager is going to be able to mould and make better.

There’s a lot of competition throughout Europe. You look at some of the boys who have gone to Italy and really flourished.

Those clubs will be swooping as well, so it’s going to be difficult for Rangers.

Hopefully he’ll edge towards Rangers, though, because I think he can make a difference.”
