Rangers ‘bid for Morgan Whittaker’ as Premier League move collapses – Insider

Rangers submitted an offer for Morgan Whittaker but Premier League clubs have been put off from making a move to sign the Plymouth Argyle star in January.

This is according to former Man United, West Ham and Aston Villa scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that he had previously raised concerns about the winger’s attitude.

Whittaker is regarded as a bright talent in the Championship and remains one of the most important players in Wayne Rooney’s side.

However, at just 23 years old, he has already had three permanent clubs – raising questions about why his former sides were so keen to see him leave.

Since making the move to Argyle in the summer of 2023, the winger has made 94 appearances, scored 32 goals and provided 16 assists.

This, alongside some spectacular eye-catching goals, had attracted interest from clubs in the Premier League, the Championship and in Scotland.

Football Insider revealed in July that Rangers were considering a move to land Whittaker on a permanent deal, while he had attracted interest from the likes of Crystal Palace and Burnley.

However, Brown has explained that concerns over his attitude, work ethic and consistency meant clubs were unwilling to make their interest formal.

The former Man United chief scout, who has a wealth of experience in player recruitment at the highest level, recalled scouting the winger in a clash with Leeds as he explained that his work off the ball had raised red flags.

I was speaking to somebody about Morgan Whittaker the other day,” he told Football Insider.

“There’s been a lot of interest in him and he’s highly thought-of because of his age and whatnot. Rangers made a bid, I believe.

“But there are questions about why he’s already had three clubs.

“There’s a reason he’s at Plymouth and none of the clubs higher up have made a move for him.

“I’ve watched him play a few times and he’s hardly broken a sweat.

“There’s no doubt he’s got talent, but can teams afford to carry him through games?

The first time I watched him was in a game against Leeds. In the game, they were 3-0 down and the team were working hard to try and hold Leeds and get back into the game.

“But I was looking at him and he was floating around, when the ball got to him he’d do something special, and then 20 minutes later he wouldn’t have had a kick.

It’s that lack of consistency and maybe part of his attitude…

“You’ve got to be a very good side to carry a player like that.

His former clubs all decided that they couldn’t carry him and they let him go. That’s why the top-level clubs haven’t made a move to sign him.

“These faults have come to the fore while he’s still only young, and yes he’s got talent, I know what he can do, but it’s hard to overlook things like that.
