Rangers’ reported interest in Fashion Sakala means one striker could be set to leave Ibrox this summer.
That’s the opinion of former Celtic hitman Frank McAvennie speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Rangers’ transfer plans.
The Daily Record have reported advanced talks between Rangers and Salaka, 24, with a four-year deal on the table at Ibrox this summer.
Rangers already have four senior strikers at the club with Cedric Itten and Jermain Defoe largely sidelined this season.
Kemar Roofe has been deployed as a wide player when Alfredo Morelos is fit but then shifted centrally when his teammate has been suspended or injured.
McAvennie claims Sakala’s possible arrival means Rangers are preparing for a striker to leave this summer and jokingly admitted that fans will have a tough time working his name into a chant.
“It’ll be a good one for the Rangers supporters to make a song about him, good luck with that one lads, all the best” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“The only reason they will bring a new striker in, I think, is if somebody is leaving.
“They’ve got Roofe, Morelos, Itten, they’ve still got Jermain Defoe there as well, that’s four strikers.
“Unless someone goes, I can’t see them bringing a new striker in. That’s going to be the thing all summer.
“They don’t need to buy anyone, they’ll only buy if someone goes. Maybe they’re preparing for that.”
Rangers’ four strikers have scored 41 goals between them in all competitions this season as the Scottish Premiership title returned to Ibrox.
The Gers are next in action at the weekend when they face Celtic in the fifth and final Old Firm clash of the season.
