‘Rangers could complete double Sheffield Wednesday raid as crisis deepens’

Rangers could be set to complete a double Sheffield Wednesday raid as the ongoing crisis at Hillsborough continues to deepen.

Rangers endured a challenging season after failing to win a trophy and finishing 17 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.

However, the US consortium’s recent takeover has now provided a renewed sense of optimism for what’s to come at Ibrox.

Football Insider revealed on 2 June Rangers’ owners would make big transfer funds available this summer.

Russell Martin has been appointed as the new head coach as he looks to improve matters on the pitch at Ibrox.

The Glasgow side have already secured the permanent signings of Oscar Cortes, Thelo Aasgaard, Emmanuel Fernandez, Joe Rothwell and Lyall Cameron, while Max Aarons and Nasser Djiga have joined on loan from Bournemouth and Wolves.

Jamie Vardy has also been linked with a move to Rangers after leaving Leicester City following the expiration of his contract.

Rangers close in on Djeidi Gassama signing

Rangers look set to take advantage of the financial problems at Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

The Star reported on 8 July Rangers have agreed personal terms and a deal with the English Championship club to sign Djeidi Gassama.

The 21-year-old winger has spent the past two years at Hillsborough after making the move from PSG in August 2023.

Gassama registered eight goals and one assist in 47 appearances in the 2024-25 season, helping the Owls secure a 12th-place finish.

Sheffield Wednesday are currently in a crisis under owner Dejphon Chansiri as pressure grows on him to sell the club, with players and staff not paid on time or in full in either May or June.

Multiple stars are believed to have handed in their 15-day notice after the wages weren’t paid, leaving the Owls needing to make the outstanding payments to avoid losing those players on free transfers.

Rangers plot move to re-sign Josh Windass

The Star reported on 9 July a host of clubs are monitoring Josh Windass’s situation, including Rangers and Wrexham.

The Sheffield-based newspaper said the Gers are considering a move to take the 31-year-old back to Ibrox.

Windass, who registered 13 goals and six assists in 47 appearances last season, previously spent two years in Glasgow between 2016 and 2018.

A switch north of the border for Windass could see the Scottish giants secure the signings of two Sheffield Wednesday stars as Gassama appears to be closing in on his move to Ibrox.
