Derek Johnstone: Rangers must clear out these players in the summer
Former Rangers striker Derek Johnstone insists director of football Mark Allen doesn’t “have any time to waste” this summer when it comes to clearing out the deadwood in the Gers squad.
The Light Blues face a huge summer with as many as fifteen players potentially on the way out at Ibrox at the end of the season.
David Bates, Danny Wilson and Niko Kranjcar are already gone or on their way out and Johnstone thinks that Allen needs to trim the squad first before the inevitable influx of new players.
“Rangers need players that can come in and improve the starting line-up straight away but you can’t just keep adding and adding without trimming from the bottom,” Johnstone said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“There are a number of players on the books that aren’t good enough and haven’t contributed enough so they need to be moved on as quickly as possible.
“Like the situation with the manager, that work can’t start once the final whistle goes in the last game of the season. Rangers don’t have any time to waste here”

With Graeme Murty’s future as manager also uncertain, the Gers could look very different by the time the line-up for the first game of next season.
After David Bates confirmed he was signing for Hamburg in the summer and Niko Kranjcar’s contract was ended early, it appears Allen has already started clearing the decks ahead of a busy summer.
Football Insider verdict:
Allen could be one of the busiest men in football this summer with a new manager and raft of transfers expected at Ibrox this summer. Allen got it largely right in January so Gers fans will be hoping he can continue that this summer and help the Ibrox giants close the gap further to bitter rivals Celtic and launch a sustained title challenge next season as well as making strides in Europe. Rangers simply can’t afford a third consecutive botched summer after getting it so badly wrong under Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha.
In other Rangers news, Gers fans were blown away by this winger’s performance in the 4-0 win over Breidablik.
