Rangers launch eleventh hour dash for centre-forward after £6m+ offer is made - report
Rangers have been forced to launch an eleventh hour dash for a new centre-forward as they look for potential replacements for Alfredo Morelos ahead of the 11pm transfer deadline on Wednesday night, according to a report.
The Express claims that a Chinese Super League club, believed to be Guangzhou, have made a verbal offer worth over £6million to the Gers for Morelos, 21, and that has sparked a late frenzy of activity at Ibrox.
It is understood that the Colombian forward, who signed for £1million from HJK Helsinki in the summer, could be set for a “big-money” move to China, which may leave Graeme Murty short of options up front.
Jason Cummings scored his first goal for the Light Blues at the weekend in the win against Ross County, but other than him, summer flop Eduardo Herrera and the injured Kenny Miller are the only out-and-out strikers in Govan.
Rangers play Fraserburgh in the Scottish Cup on Wednesday night, and that game could have a massive impact on how Rangers go about their transfer business as that could potentially cut off any deals several hours before the deadline.
Football Insider verdict
Morelos’ value is not going to depreciate that much between now and the end of the season, but that bid from China is very tempting to say the least. It means the Gers could pocket over six times what they paid for the striker and it would go a long way in helping the club progress in the future. The only problem is that Murty and Mark Allen appeared to have finished their efforts to bring players in and were perhaps only looking at strikers before he could play second fiddle to Morelos. Now they would have more money to spend and would have to fill a very big void, which is not a simply task in just over 24 hours. Rangers’ best bet is to just reject it.
In other Rangers news, King is due to hold talks on Tuesday as this in-form duo is eyed up for a last-gasp exit from Ibrox.
