Alan Hutton believes that Steven Gerrard would have axed Alfredo Morelos from the Rangers starting XI had Kemar Roofe or Cedric Itten been match fit.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Gers star and boyhood fan at Ibrox suggests that the boss will have wanted to drop the Colombia international for his attitude in recent weeks.
The 24-year-old, who has started every game this season, has been subbed off in the club’s last three league matches and has come under fire for his attitude and reaction after being hooked off.
The Gers have both had both Roofe and Itten on the bench in recent weeks but neither has started under Gerrard.
Hutton believes that the manager would have wanted to take Morelos out of the starting XI but believes a lack of match fitness for his other options has left him with little choice.
Speaking after the 0-0 draw with Livingston, Hutton told Football Insider: “He just looked back to his previous self if you want. Even the way he came off the pitch, it’s been well highlighted that he looked angry, he didn’t look interested, it just didn’t go down well for everybody looking on.
“I think at the end of the day, it’s down to the team. There is no player bigger than the team and I think we’d be having a different conversation if Kemar Roofe and Itten were fully ready to go.
“I think it would be a different line up to be honest, and that’s solely going on performances, that’s how you play: ‘What’s his performances like, what’s his attitude like? He’s off it – well he can’t play the next game.’ It’s as simple as that.”
Morelos has scored twice and chipped in with a further two assists for the Gers in the Premiership this season.
His brace against St Mirren means he has now scored just three goals in 2020.
