Rangers expert baffled by ‘surprise’ Giovanni van Bronckhorst decision

Giovanni van Bronckhorst should revert to a three-at-the-back formation to give Rangers their confidence back.

That’s according to ex-Gers boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Van Brockhorst’s tactics.

Against Napoli (14 September), John Lundstram moved back from midfield to line up in a back three alongside Connor Goldson and Jamie Sands who was eventually sent off.

However, Van Bronckhorst converted back to a four-man defence for the 2-1 win over Dundee United at the weekend (17 September).

McLeish was surprised after being impressed by Rangers’ performance against the Seria A leaders.

“I thought he [Van Bronckhorst] may have continued with that formation in the Dundee United game,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“That was a wee bit of a surprise. It would have been good to see that momentum and say ‘let’s see what we can do with this system domestically’.

“It gave them more attacking flow. It unleashed Tavernier on the flanks and I think that was one of the key principles.

“I thought Giovanni would stick to it. It’s a good system and gave Rangers more attacking options. The performance against Dundee United was a little bit stale.

“In the end, it was a bit fraught when United got a goal back. It was a run of games where confidence has really eroded and it is time to get that confidence back.”

Leon King partnered Goldson against Dundee United as he made his first league start for his boyhood club.

The Gers are next in action against Hearts on 1 October.
