Former Rangers star Gio van Bronckhorst became surprise second favourite to take over from Pedro Caixinha as manager on Wednesday – and Gers fans on Twitter lost their minds.

SkyBet have slashed the odds on the Feyenoord boss taking the Ibrox job to 6/4 after not even listing him among the candidates in the hours following Caixinha’s sacking two weeks ago.

The 107-times capped Dutch icon spent three years at Ibrox – scoring 22 times in 117 appearances – and lifted two Scottish titles, two Scottish Cups and a Scottish League Cup before heading south to join Arsenal in an £8.5million deal.

Van Bronckhorst led Feyenoord to their first title in 18 years last season and is enjoying a rapidly-growing reputation as a manager.

Despite a poor start to this campaign, the former Barcelona star is still highly-regarded as a manager.

Rangers fans are delighted by the prospect of van Bronckhorst taking over – with most preferring him over favourite Derek McInnes.

Before taking over as manager at Feyenoord, van Bronckhorst spent four years as assistant manager to, first, Ronald Koeman and Fred Rutten.

Graeme Murty has been in temporary charge of the Gers since Caixinha’s dismissal and has led the Gers to two wins from two.

The Light Blues return to action after the international break on November 18th when they play Hamilton.
