Rangers have found Scott Arfield replacement as fresh details emerge – pundit

John Lundstram could freeze out Rangers midfielders Steven Davis and Scott Arfield after finally “settling down” at Ibrox.

That is the view of former Aberdeen striker Noel Whelan, who was speaking exclusively to Football Insider in the wake of the Gers’ 2-1 triumph in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Lundstram played 102 minutes during the extra-time victory at Hampden Park and claimed the Man of the Match award.

Just days earlier, the former Sheffield United midfielder produced a dominant display during the extra-time win over Braga in the Europa League quarter-final.

Lundstram has started seven of the last nine Scottish Premiership games for Rangers after initially struggling to hold down a starting berth following his Ibrox arrival last summer (2021).

Whelan suggested the midfielder’s form could spell the end for Davis and Arfield – with both veterans out of contract at the end of the season.

“It has taken him a bit of time to settle down at Rangers,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“It’s not easy to walk into Scottish football having come from the Premier League. It’s a real culture change and a change of style.

“He’s adapting, and you’re now seeing the John Lundstram Rangers hoped they would get when they signed him from Sheffield United.

“There will have been frustration, both for him and the fans – but now both sides are reaping the rewards.

“He’s a big part of that Rangers side right now.

“It’s hard to see Davis and Arfield coming back into that side – especially as age isn’t on their side.”
