‘Rangers have found the next Terry Butcher – great signing for Russell Martin’

Rangers have been tipped to sign the “new Terry Butcher” as Russell Martin makes his first moves in the transfer market ahead of his maiden season in charge.

Martin began his reign at Ibrox at the beginning of the month (5 June), penning a three-year deal with the Glasgow giants.

Four days later, Football Insider exclusively revealed (9 June) that Rangers had enquired about the availability of Leicester defender Conor Coady.

The 32-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at the Foxes, and could be one of the players departing the King Power Stadium this summer after Premier League relegation.

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – says that the reports linking Coady to Rangers have caught his eye and believes that the former Toffees defender would be a great signing.

‘Coady would fit perfectly into Martin’s system’, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness revealed that the addition of Coady would remind him of the “Terry Butcher” days.

Butcher played for the Gers between 1986 and 1990, leading them to three league titles in four seasons as club captain.

Wyness added that Coady would have no problem fitting into the Martin system.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “The name that I saw linked with Rangers recently, Conor Coady.

“Having had experience with Conor, I think he would be a great signing for Rangers. He’d remind me a bit of the Terry Butcher days, that famous era at Rangers with Gazza (Paul Gascoigne).

“I think that Conor Coady is that type of character that would go down really well at Ibrox and would be a great addition, and would play the Russell Martin way as well.

Even for a season or two to stabilise things, I think that would be a great signing to come in, so I would see that as a possibility for Rangers.”

Rangers open talks to sign Peterborough’s Fernandez

Meanwhile, Football Insider exclusively revealed that Rangers have opened talks to sign Peterborough defender Emmanuel Fernandez.

Martin has given the green light to landing the 23-year-old as he looks to strengthen his central defensive options.

Fernandez was wanted by Norwich in the January window but ended up staying at League One outfit Peterborough for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.
