Rangers have the perfect chance to sign Kilmarnock midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu on a free transfer in the summer after his manager Steve Clarke admitted that he may quit Rugby Park.
Mulumbu, 31, joined Killie in November after being released by Norwich and has been thoroughly impressive as Clarke’s side have surged up the Scottish Premiership standings.
The former DR Congo international has illustrated his years of Premier League experience from his time at West Brom with man of the match displays against both Rangers and Celtic, scoring the winning goal against Brendan Rodgers’ side in February.
The box-to-box midfielder’s form has even led to Gers fans calling on the club to sign him up in the summer, so now it seems that the Light Blues have a massive chance of actually making that happen – especially as Sean Goss’ loan deal expires at the end of the season without an option to buy clause in his deal.
Mulumbu’s form has led to Clarke admitting that the ex-Paris Saint-German midfielder has now put himself in the shop window and there’s no doubt that fans would go crazy if director of football Mark Allen was able to snap him up for free.
“I wouldn’t say I was over-confident of keeping Youssouf,” said Clarke ahead of Saturday’s visit of Hamilton,” said Clarke, as quoted by the Herald.
“He came up here to put himself back in the shop window and I think he’s done that with his performances.
“That’s been great for Youssouf and it’s been great for Kilmarnock. I said to the supporters that they just had to enjoy him while he was here.
“And I imagine a bigger club will come in for Youssouf in the summer as he’s a free transfer. If that happens, we wish him well.
“If that doesn’t materialise and he wants to stay here, he knows all he has to do is chap my door.”
Rangers do have a lot of central midfielders on their books with Goss, Greg Docherty, Graham Dorrans, Ryan Jack and several fringe players also in the squad.
However Mulumbu is simply a cut above most of them, especially Dorrans who he forced down the pecking order in his time at West Brom, and could be the perfect mentor for someone like 21-year-old Docherty, who is improving steadily every time he plays.
Allen has pulled off some brilliant signings at Ibrox so far and snapping up Mulumbu will be the icing on the cake.
In other Rangers news, it was confirmed on Friday that this centre-forward has agreed terms for a deal at Ibrox.
