Rangers in ‘crisis’: Keith Wyness says ‘red lights are flashing’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers will be a club in “crisis” if they can’t start turning profits on players.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed “very big red lights are flashing” with Celtic outperforming them on and off the pitch.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (7 August) that Rangers’ transfer plans hinge on qualification for the league phase of the Champions League.

The Glasgow club drew 1-1 in Poland against Dynamo Kyiv in the competition’s third qualifying round on Tuesday and now face a crucial home clash next week with the tie on the line.

Nathan Patterson and Calvin Bassey were the last big-money sales at Rangers, who have lost money in each of the last two seasons.

Wyness claims Rangers ‘crisis’ is coming amid Celtic comparison

Meanwhile, Celtic sold Jota last year for a club-record fee – while the likes of Matt O’Riley and Reo Hatate have attracted big-money interest.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Rangers need to do something quickly.

“They’re a club who are going to be in crisis very soon if they can’t start turning profits on players.

“They’ve got, I think, a tough draw in the Champions League.

“That cash is crucial for Rangers.

“The player trading strategy has not been as successful as Celtic, and that’s what they’ll always be compared to.

“You can’t help it in Glasgow.

Rangers

“Celtic have had great success with players coming in from overseas and going on to make decent profits, and Rangers haven’t done it.

“You’ve got that, plus what’s happening on the pitch – there are some very big red lights flashing.”
