Rangers: James Tavernier contract hurdle revealed as Ibrox chiefs weigh up extension

Rangers are facing one major hurdle as they continue to weigh up whether to offer James Tavernier a new contract to keep him at Ibrox.

The 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season but remains a key player under Danny Rohl, while his leadership is seen as a valuable asset.

Rangers are therefore leaning towards offering him an extension to his current deal, although they have yet to make a firm decision and no talks have been held.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Tavernier’s age is a concern as he edges towards the end of his career.

They are undecided about the length of any contract offer as well, while Rangers are making new transfer plans and could opt to replace him.

Rangers open door to James Tavernier contract extension

Football Insider revealed on 14 March that Rangers are open to extending Tavernier’s contract as he remains an important part of Danny Rohl’s plans.

Tavernier’s role as a leader both on and off the pitch means he remains part of Rohl’s plans, despite what could be a busy transfer window at Ibrox.

He has made 45 appearances already this season and remains a crucial influence on the pitch with his goal and assist tally impressive as ever.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “It’s just his age, which is probably the only sort of issue in this decision. He’s 34 now, turns 35 in October.

“But he still offers a lot to Rangers despite his age.

“He’s played so many games this season, he’s club captain as well so he’s got a big influence on and off the pitch. I think Rangers ideally would like to keep him.

“It’ll all depend on how long they’re willing to offer him in any new contract. If it’s not what Tavernier wants, then maybe he could be tempted to move on.

“But as I said, I think the preference for both would be for Tavernier to sign a new contract.”

How does Tavernier feel about new Rangers contract?

With Rangers still weighing up their final decision over Tavernier’s future, although a new offer looks likely, the captain has a decision to make.

His wage will not only be a consideration for the club, but the player as well, as he hopes to continue at the club he has been at for 11 years.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 9 March that Tavernier wants to stay at Rangers and eventually retire at the club.

The length of any potential contract offer could be the key to reaching an agreement, whether it is one or two years, to keep the right-back at the club.

Talks are expected to take place closer to the end of the season after Rangers learn their fate in a close-fought title race with Celtic and Hearts.
