Rangers: Keith Wyness says what Jim Gillespie will be doing from ‘day one’ at Ibrox

Rangers need to find young talent which they can sell on for a profit in the summer transfer window, according to Keith Wyness.

The former Aberdeen chief executive, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes Jim Gillespie needs to begin changing Rangers’ transfer strategy.

Gillespie replaces Patrick Stewart as Rangers’ new chief executive, and begins work at Ibrox ahead of what could be a busy summer transfer window for the Glasgow club.

Manager Danny Rohl was backed in the January window, and will want to continue rebuilding his squad in the summer.

Rangers’ transfer plans could depend on European qualification, and Gillespie is set to be a key figure behind any deals.

Jim Gillespie has work to do at Rangers ‘from day one’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Gillespie must set the foundations for Rangers signing “unpolished gems” and selling them on.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks player trading is important for the sustainability of the club.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Rangers need to be looking at young talent coming through.

“They’ve got to have that blend of experience as well to guide them through the Scottish Premiership, and then Europe.

“Player trading is where they have got to be trying to find those unpolished gems, shine them up, and sell them on. So Rangers have got to learn to do that.

“And this is what Mr. Gillespie is going to be doing from day one, is putting in place that team to make sure they do it.”

Who could Rangers target in the summer transfer window?

Rangers have been linked with pursuing numerous players to help strengthen Rohl’s squad ahead of next season.

Whilst the Gers would like to keep Tottenham loanee Mikey Moore at Ibrox, a permanent move for the 18-year-old looks hard to achieve.

Sources have told Football Insider that Rangers are keeping tabs on Motherwell forward Elijah Just, but face competition from rivals Celtic.

Kilmarnock’s David Watson and Liverpool midfielder Luca Stephenson, on loan at Dundee United, could be other Scottish Premiership stars heading to Ibrox this summer.
