Rangers: Kris Boyd trolls VAR officials after Tochi Chukwuani goal controversy vs Falkirk

Rangers hero Kris Boyd has joked at VAR’s expense on social media after the officials were unable to determine if their first goal against Falkirk went out of play.

Rangers emerged as 6-3 victors at Falkirk on Sunday in a classic Premiership match that saw the hosts go two ahead inside the first half hour.

Tochi Chukwuani reduced the deficit for Danny Rohl’s side three minutes before the break after Falkirk’s defenders froze because they thought Nico Raskin’s cross had gone out of play.

The Belgian’s lofted cross was knocked back across goal by Djeidi Gassama before being lashed home by Chukwuani, and it was checked by VAR, but their angles could not provide conclusive evidence of whether it was out of play.

Videos on social media showed that the ball did stay in play before the goal, with the 6-3 win providing a huge boost ahead of Rangers’ next match against Motherwell.

Kris Boyd makes light of VAR’s troubles for Rangers’ first goal vs Falkirk

Rangers are sitting second in the Premiership on 66 points ahead of the league split, and they now have two weeks off before facing Motherwell at Ibrox.

Falkirk’s players were sure that the ball had gone out before Chukwuani’s goal on Sunday, but evidence to the contrary was provided by clips on social media that showed it staying on the right side of the line.

The VAR had to stick with referee Don Robertson’s on-field decision of goal after being unable to determine if it had strayed out of play, and former Gers man and current pundit Boyd weighed in on their struggles after the game.

Taking to his Instagram story on Sunday evening, he uploaded an edited image of himself holding a camera and the inconclusive angles that were provided to the VAR officials alongside the caption: “Well, the ball definitely didn’t go out on my camera.”

What did Boyd say about Raskin after Rangers’ win?

Even though he provided the cross that set Rangers on their way to a resounding victory at the Falkirk Stadium, Raskin did come in for some criticism from Boyd while he was speaking live on Sky Sports.

The former Gers striker picked out the Belgian international for some lacklustre defending that allowed Finn Yeats the space to put the hosts 2-0 up in the 26th minute.

He said: “I’ve no idea why Raskin is standing next to his centre-backs. That’s his space, leave that to your centre-backs, they can pick up Barney Stewart, and he steps up to block the shot.”

The Gers man went on to shine in the second half and proved why he has been linked away from Ibrox, after sources told Football Insider that Leeds could sign Raskin this summer.
