Rangers legend Lee McCulloch thinks Steven Gerrard can have a similar impact on the Gers as Brendan Rodgers did at bitter rivals Celtic – by changing the “full mentality” of everyone associated with the club.
McCulloch thinks the way Rodgers turned Celtic around after only making two signings “of note” in his first transfer window is something that “there’s no reason” Gerrard can’t replicate at Ibrox.
The former Gers skipper also admitted he is intrigued to see the effect Gerrard has on top scorer Josh Windass after a divisive campaign for the 24-year-old last season.
“It will be interesting to see what impact Steven Gerrard has on the Rangers players from the current squad that he is keeping around the club, and none more so than Josh Windass,” McCulloch said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“When you look at the impact that Brendan Rodgers had at Celtic, he only brought in two signings in the first summer window of any note, but he managed to completely change the full mentality of the team, the individuals, the fans and the club.
“There’s no reason why Steven can’t do the same. He will have told the players that they are starting from a clean slate.”
Football Insider verdict:
Mentality has been one of the biggest problems at Rangers in recent years and, as McCulloch says, there’s no reason Gerrard can’t have the same impact Rodgers did when he replaced Ronny Deila two years ago. The former Liverpool captain was a winner as a player and will want to be a winner as manager and if he can instil that into his players then it could – like Celtic – see a remarkable turnaround. Rodgers took Deila’s team that lost to Rangers at Hampden under Mark Warburton to treble-winning invincibles in 12 month without making that many signings – and Gerrard can definitely do similar at Ibrox and take his side from last season’s third-place finish in the Scottish Premiership to properly competing for trophies and ending Celtic’s recent domination of the Scottish game. If he can have a similar effect at Ibrox as Rodgers did at Celtic Park, it would make an interesting race between the two to see who ends up managing in the Premier League first.
