Rangers manager Steven Gerrard wants to sign West Ham defender Reece Burke in the summer transfer window, according to a report.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Gers face a host of competition for the highly-rated 21-year old with Aston Villa, Leeds and Reading all looking to snap the defender up on a permanent deal while Sheffield Wednesday want to strike a loan deal with the Premier League side.

The 6ft 2in defender has made 15 total appearances for West Ham since breaking into the first team and scored his first goal for the club in the League Cup.

Football Insider verdict

Burke would be a very interesting prospect for the Gers and, with the right partner beside him in defence, could be a mainstay in the Gers’ defence for years to come. After an impressive spell on loan at Bolton helped keep the Trotters in the Championship, Burke is ready for more regular first-team football and the chance to come to Ibrox and work with Gerrard could prove to be a massive draw. With Russell Martin and David Bates both definitely leaving and the possibility that Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso could follow suit so the Gers boss needs to bring in defenders as a matter of urgency. If the Gers can negotiate a good deal for Burke the Under-20 international would make a good signing. Being able to also fill-in at right-back is a boost too as it would give the Gers a few more options over the course of the season.
