Rangers get decision to offload midfielder on temporary basis 100% correct
Rangers midfielder Liam Burt joined Championship strugglers Dumbarton on loan on Friday – and the decision to offload him temporarily is 100% correct as it could help the youngster kick on and reach the next level.
Burt has been widely tipped for big things at Ibrox but has struggled with injuries over the last six months and only recently returned to action with the Gers’ development squad.
The midfielder made his first-team debut for the Gers under Mark Warburton but now has an opportunity to get some regular first-team football under his belt and get back to full fitness after injury.
Burt will find plenty of familiar faces at Dumbarton with a host of former Rangers players at the Sons and current Ibrox team-mate Aidan Wilson also on a temporary contract at the Rock.
Despite having seems as if he has been around for a long time, Burt only turned 19 a few weeks ago and is still a long way from being the finished article and his move to Dumbarton will let him play competitive games at a level well above what he will be used to in the Development League or the club’s games programme.
The Gers youngster faces real competition from within the club’s Academy to make the step up to the first-team with the likes of Serge Atakayi and Glenn Middleton providing a fierce fight for places in the Under-20’s side let along the first-team.
After seeing Ross McCrorie make an identical switch 12 months ago, if Burt can get his head down and work hard while on loan he could very well find himself stepping into the first-team squad at Ibrox much more regularly next season.
