Mark Allen must rip up Rangers senior player contract in summer and replace him
Rangers manager Graeme Murty and director of football Mark Allen need to make a bold decision in the summer and rip up Bruno Alves’ contract after yet another disappointing performance from the veteran.
The 94-times capped Portugal defender looked every inch a run of the mill Scottish Premiership defender in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Kilmarnock and should be replaced in the summer.
Alves holds out a hope of going to this summer’s World Cup with Portugal – two years after winning the European Championship in France – but on the strength of his performances for Rangers there is little chance of a call to join Cristiano Ronaldo and co in Russia.
Big things were expected when the senior defender joined from Cagliari last summer but after being kept out of the side by former Raith Rovers central defender David Bates, time is up for Alves at Ibrox.
Ross McCrorie and Aidan Wilson are both more than capable of replacing Alves in the first-team while the Gers hierarchy will also need to look at bringing in an imposing defender to shore up their back line – like Alves was intended to.

With his age looking like it is quickly catching up with him too, the former Porto, Fenerbahce and Zenit St. Petersburg defender is likely on a healthy wage which could be used far better elsewhere by the Ibrox giants.
