Tying Connor Goldson down to a new contract would be a “great signing” for Rangers, according to Noel Whelan.
The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 28-year-old deserved to be lifted into the bracket of top earners at Ibrox.
As revealed by Football Insider, Goldson has reached an agreement in principle over a new deal worth around £4.5million.
Steven Gerrard confirmed the Gers were in contract talks with the centre-back last week.
Goldson will earn around £30,000-a-week with his new deal.
That is the same sort of level Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe.
Goldson’s current contract is set to expire next summer but his new terms are expected to run until 2024.
He has not missed a single minute of action in his 52 appearances across all competition this term.
Whelan heralded the defender for being such a core member of the squad.
As such, he claimed the new contract was an “exciting” deal for the Glasgow giants.
Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “It’s a no brainer. He’s been at the heart of that defence.
“He has been solid, he has been consistent, he has been a leader back there. Also, he has come up with some very important goals as well, along with the performances. He is gonna be playing in Europe next year.
“It’s exciting, great for Rangers, great for the young man and that stability that we keep talking about. Keep your players happy at football clubs, keeping a successful side together but adding more plays along with it.
“I’m sure that’s what Rangers will do. It’s a great signing for Rangers and they’re in a really healthy position. Everything seems to be going well for them.
“There’s harmony at the football club and they’re looking to progress and get stronger next season with players as well.”
