Kieran Maguire: Rangers on course for £20m-plus windfall after ‘transformational’ reveal

Rangers are on course for a “transformational” £20million-plus windfall if they qualify for the Champions League this term.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the importance of European football to the Ibrox club.

The winners of this year’s Scottish Premiership will receive automatic qualification for the Champions League group stages.

The runners-up meanwhile will enter the competition at the preliminary rounds, thanks to Scotland’s improved Uefa coefficient.

Rangers bigwig Stewart Robertson told The Athletic on Thursday (13 January) that group stage participation is worth “£20m” to the club.

The reigning Scottish champions were knocked out before the group stages in this year’s iteration.

Maguire emphasised the financial significance of qualifying for Europe’s premier club competition this time around.

“Pre-Covid, they were making about £60m,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“So that is increasing your revenue by a third. That is transformational. When he talks about £20m, that’s a worst-case scenario.

“You get 2.7m for every victory and 900,000 euro for every draw. A few good results for Rangers and that £30m becomes £40m.

“Then, if you manage to make the knockouts, £40m can become £50m and so on. That’s enormous.

“It also has an impact on your Uefa coefficient, so it becomes a virtuous circle.”
