Rangers senior players must step up in season-defining clash v Hibernian

COMMENT

Rangers will travel to Easter Road on Sunday in a must-win clash with Hibernian – and the Ibrox giants need their senior players to step up if they are to secure second in the Scottish Premiership.

Against Aberdeen on Tuesday night, far too many of the senior stars in the Gers squad retreated into their shells as the Ibrox giants needed big performances against Derek McInnes’ side.

The Gers had a fantastic opportunity to overtake the Dons in Tuesday’s Pittodrie clash but for long spells played without any urgency whatsoever as they went through the motions.

With Steven Gerrard’s imminent arrival likely to spark a massive overhaul of the Gers squad, the clash with Hibs is the last chance many of the squad will have to stake a claim for an Ibrox future under the Liverpool legend.

Although there’s not a huge difference between finishing second and finishing third – around £500,000 – pipping the Dons would be a sign of progress for the Gers after last year’s third-placed finish.

While the Gers will need a favour from bitter rivals Celtic now if they are to overtake Aberdeen and secure second, the Light Blues need to first make sure they keep up their end and take three points against Hibs.
