Rangers mainstay ready to quit Ibrox, two English clubs in pursuit – report

Rangers right-back James Tavernier is ready to leave Ibrox after two English clubs have become interested in signing him in January, according to a report.

The Daily Mail claims that Championship sides Sunderland and Reading are keeping close tabs on Tavernier, 26, and the cash-strapped Light Blues are willing to listen to any offers in order to make a bit of cash.

It is understood that the defender is ready to quit Ibrox as he is keen on the idea of returning to England after two-and-a-half years in Glasgow, where he has made a total of 120 appearances and won the 2015/16 Scottish Championship title.

Tavernier signed for Rangers in 2015 from Wigan in a deal worth £200,000 when Mark Warburton was manager.

He has since become a mainstay of the first-team, making the right-back slot his own and keeping his spot while Pedro Caixinha was at the helm and now Graeme Murty.

Football Insider verdict

Rangers don’t really have another decent right-back at the club and would be making a huge mistake if they were to offload Tavernier next month. Although the ex-Wigan man isn’t the best in the Scottish Premiership, he is definitely someone that Murty and director of football Mark Allen should be wanting to keep around when Lee Hodson is his only back-up option. The Gers probably won’t get a decent fee for selling Tavernier and will perhaps not be able to sign up a new right-back who is equal in quality. There is plenty of deadwood at Ibrox that needs selling before any of the first-team players.
