‘Rangers set for north American takeover move’ after what ‘sources told me’
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has revealed he expects a North American group to make a takeover move for Rangers in the near future.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed a number of investor syndicates have been in touch with him about potential opportunities in the UK.
Wyness has previously told Football Insider (23 November) that Rangers “is a big opportunity” for investors with the club’s valuation tanking under the current board.
The club’s net losses increased by £4.1million from the 2022-23 campaign to £17.2million for last season in the latest sign of trouble at Ibrox.
Rangers have appointed Patrick Stewart as their next chief executive with the ex-Man United man set to take the new role in December.
‘North American’ takeover most likely option for Rangers, says Wyness
Wyness insisted the “business case” for an overseas takeover is viable despite Scottish football not being as “glamorous” as the English Premier League.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think if it’s anywhere, North America is becoming the favourite.
“There are so many investor syndicates I’m hearing about, or have been in touch with me.
“They’re looking at clubs in the UK.
“Rangers have got a compelling story, they’ve got the benefits of a huge fanbase – there’s a story for investors.
“The trouble is that the Scottish Premiership is not as glamorous as the Premier League.
“Nevertheless, as an investment with a weaker valuation – the business case is becoming more compelling.
“We may see a move coming from North America sooner rather than later.”
