New Rangers signing Russell Martin has revealed why he chose a move to Ibrox over remaining in the English Championship – and admitted everything about the Glasgow side is “huge.”
Martin became the Gers’ latest signing when he moved north on a season-long loan as Graeme Murty revamps the squad he inherited from Pedro Caixinha in October.
The Gers have landed Sean Goss, Jamie Murphy, Jason Cummings and Martin on loan this month with full-back Declan John completing a permanent move.
Martin also revealed he wants to help ex-Norwich colleague Murty as he takes his first steps as a manager in his own right.
“I picked Rangers because of the size of the football club, I think everything it is about, the tradition, the history and the position it is in at the minute and obviously the manager as well,” Martin said, as quoted by the Gers’ official website.
“I have worked with the manager a little bit before at Norwich but it is just really the opportunity to come and play here in front of this crowd on a regular basis.
“The facilities are amazing and everything about it is huge, it is a huge football club and at this stage in my career to come here really excites me, it is a challenge as well. I hope I can come in and help them, help the manager and keep on progressing.
“I saw the work he did with the youth team at Norwich, he is a really really good coach and he has done a good job here in the short time he has been in charge.”
Martin has made over 300 appearances for the Canaries and was club captain before completing his move to Ibrox.
The 32-year-old has struggled for regular game-time so far this season under Daniel Farke and the Norwich boss was more than happy to the the defender go out on loan and get some regular games.
Martin has won 29 appearances for Scotland although hasn’t appeared for the Dark Blues since March 2017.
Along with the other new faces, Martin could make his competitive debut for the Ibrox side when they travel to face Highland League minnows Fraserburgh in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup at tiny Bellslea Park on Sunday.
