Rangers ace Docherty details short-term aims, says what he is not thinking about
Rangers ace Greg Docherty has revealed he is concentrating on establishing himself at Ibrox before thinking about international honours after being mentioned as a possible replacement for Scott Brown in the national team.
The 21-year-old only joined the Gers in January but has impressed in his appearances so far after his switch from Hamilton.
Docherty has been named as a possible long-term replacement for Brown after his retirement from the international scene but the Gers ace insists he is more concerned about his Gers form and getting back into the Scotland Under-21 squad.
“I am not thinking about that at the moment to be honest. If it comes, it comes,” Docherty said, as quoted by BT Sport.
“My aim is to get in the under-21s team. I didn’t play the last couple of games there so I would like to be involved more.
“It has always been a dream to get to the (senior) squad but I am taking each game as it comes with Rangers. I want consistency playing for Rangers first and then I will look further on.”
The central midfielder has left fans wanting more after making his first starts for the Gers and pulling the strings form Graeme Murty’s side in central midfield.
The former Hamilton star has plenty of experience in domestic football with over 100 appearances for the Accies despite his age and will likely be a key player for Murty’s side in the coming months.
Docherty has made three appearances for the Scotland Under-21 side and made his seventh appearance in a Rangers jersey in Tuesday’s comprehensive win over St. Johnstone at McDiarmid Park on Tuesday night.
Docherty could make his first Old Firm appearance when Celtic visit Ibrox on March 11th in a match which could have a huge say in the title race.
