Rangers are still on the trail of Brighton defender Connor Goldson as incoming Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard prepares to challenge Celtic for the title in his first season in charge of the Light Blues, according to a report.
The Evening Times claim the 25-year-old is still high on Gerrard’s wanted list as the Liverpool icon looks to add at least one or two defenders to his squad over the summer, with a push for the league title on his agenda.
The Gers have already seen a bid for the defender thrown out, according to The Argus, but it is claimed that the Light Blues will prepare a new bid.
Goldson spent 10 months out after having to undergo surgery to correct a heart problem before returning to action in December, but found game time difficult to come by with the Seagulls.
Football Insider verdict:
The Ibrox giants need at least a couple of new defenders and Goldson looks as though he fits the bill. The 25-year-old has not played a huge amount recently for a number of reasons and the chance for a fresh start and the opportunity to play regularly could be a big draw for the former Shrewsbury defender. With just over a week until Gerrard takes the reins officially, the Gers might cool their recruitment, publicly at least, after already confirming the signings of Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield and Jamie Murphy over the last week. Even if Goldson does sign the Ibrox giants could do with another addition in central defence – Martin Skrtel’s reported move would be perfect – and shore up a defence that conceded far too many cheap goals last term and arguably cost the Gers any real chance at mounting a serious title challenge last term under Pedro Caixinha and then Graeme Murty.
In other Rangers transfer news, the club are in hot pursuit of a 6’4″ colossus who could be signing of the season.
