Murty delivers verdict after talks with Windass ahead of cup clash v Ayr United
Graeme Murty has revealed he is likely to stick with the under-fire Josh Windass, as Rangers travel to face Ayr United in the Scottish Cup fifth-round tie this afternoon.
Windass upset the Rangers faithful last week, appearing to celebrate with a finger to his lips directed at them after scoring, as the midfielder had been on the receiving end of some negative comments from his own fans.
However, Murty stated on Sky Sports, as quoted by Ninety Minutes Online, that the English born midfielder has to learn not to let the frustration get the better of him.
I’ve spoken to him,” Murty said.
“Josh is aware of his responsibility both as a professional athlete and a Rangers player. He has the responsibility to conduct himself in a certain manner.
”He is a very off-the-cuff kind of guy, very much plays in the moment and I think you saw an outpouring of frustration, with his own game at times, and it is something he needs to manage better.
”Sometimes you have to make a mistake and suffer the consequences of it to grow as a person. If he does that and he grows, he could grow into some athlete and player.”
Windass is in line to start for the Gers this afternoon, and the Glasgow giants are hoping he can replicate the hat-trick scored against Fraserbrugh in the fourth round.
The 24-year-old has been consistent this season, finding the net 10 times for Rangers from the midfield, and he could add to that number this afternoon, if Murty picks him.
It is clear that Windass has to earn the Ibrox faithful’s respect back, and the best way to do that is to perform on the pitch, and with a place in the quarter final at stake, today is a good chance to do just that.
The Gers fans will not want to leave the competition after having seen Celtic progress yesterday by beating Partick Thistle 3-2.
