‘Rangers to sign Kwame Poku on cheap wages as Ibrox loan exit mooted already’

Rangers have been backed to both complete the signing of Kwame Poku and leave the door open to a loan exit from the club for the winger.

This is a big summer for the club as they look to finally close the gap on Celtic, following the takeover of the club by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises.

Russell Martin has been appointed as the new Rangers manager, taking over as the permanent replacement for Philippe Clement following Barry Ferguson’s spell in interim charge.

Meanwhile, the ‘Gers are starting to make moves in the transfer window, as they aim to put together a side capable of challenging for silverware.

Lyall Cameron has officially completed his move to Rangers this week, and there could be more incomings at Ibrox on the way.

Kwame Poku targeted for Russell Martin rebuild

It has recently been reported that the Glasgow outfit are among several clubs who are hoping to sign Kwame Poku this summer [Sky Sports].

The winger is out of contract at Peterborough at the end of this month, meaning Rangers would only have to pay a nominal fee for the services of the 23-year-old.

Poku enjoyed an impressive season in League One during the 2024/25 campaign, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists across 27 league appearances.

As a result, Ross McCormack believes this would be a smart deal for Martin‘s side to get done, given it would be a relatively move as well.

However, the former Rangers striker also believes the club should be open to letting him leave swiftly, if the move does not immediately work out.

Speaking about those links with Poku on Clyde 1 SuperScoreBoard, McCormack said: “Yeah it’s low risk. Obviously I don’t think the wages will be too high as well coming from League One in England, no disrespect.

“But also if it doesn’t work out in the first year or whatever, given what he’s done at Peterborough he could probably still go out on loan and get more experience that way, and come back an even better player so it’s a no-brainer for Rangers.”

Rangers should consider winger deal

Football Insider Verdict

There is a need for some reinforcements in the attacking midfield area at Ibrox this summer, with Tom Lawrence moving on from Ibrox following the end of his contract.

Meanwhile, it also remains to be seen if Vaclav Cerny will return to Rangers following the end of his successful loan spell with the club.

The signing of Poku could help to fill the void left by the latter in particular, as an option on the right-hand side of attack.

His number from his time at Peterborough are certainly promising, and at his age there is time for him to improve even more.

It could therefore make sense for Rangers to try and sign him on the cheap now, before he heads elsewhere and becomes harder to sign in the future.

If they then did need to loan him out as McCormack suggests, there would be no shortage of takers willing to help him develop his game, which would make him an asset at Ibrox in the long-term at least.
