Rangers told to appoint Terry as Van Bronckhorst talks breakdown mooted - pundit

John Terry would be a “great manager” for Rangers if he landed the job, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer tipped his ex-teammate to be a success when he takes his first step into management.

Football Insider revealed at the start of Rangers’ recruitment process Terry and Ronald Koeman appeared high on their early list of candidates as Ross Wilson led the search for Steven Gerrard’s successor.

The Athletic reported today (November 17) the Ibrox giants are now in advanced negotiations with former player Giovani van Bronckhorst.

It is claimed discussions are now taking place over the Dutchman’s potential backroom staff after Gerrard took five members of staff with him to Aston Villa.

Asked whether Terry would be a good alternative if negotiations with van Bronckhorst broke down, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “Yes, I think so.

“There’s no reason why John Terry can’t do a good job if he went in there but we don’t know if he actually applied for the job

“I’m sure John Terry will pick the right job at the right time for him and I think he’ll be a great manager.”

Terry has never been a manager but spent three years on Dean Smith’s coaching staff at Aston Villa.

He left the club over the summer to pursue any potential opportunities to become a manager.

His departure from Villa coincided with a downturn in their form that saw Smith sacked and replaced with Gerrard.
