Rangers told to ‘look at Celtic’ as deal for ‘new Alfredo Morelos’ mooted – pundit

Noel Whelan has urged Rangers to “cover their backs” by signing a future replacement for Alfredo Morelos.

The former Leeds and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Colombia international is “in control” of his own future amid “constant speculation” on the subject.

According to Football Scotland (29 July), Morelos, 26, is in talks over a new Rangers contract – with his current terms having less than a year to run.

The report claims Ryan Kent has also opened discussions – with Giovanni van Bronckhorst revealing both stars are “more than open” to staying at the club.

Rangers have raked in almost £35million in transfer fees this summer after selling key men Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo.

Celtic won the Scottish Premiership last season thanks in part to the free-scoring partnership of Kyogo Furuhashi, Giorgios Giakoumakis, and Daizen Maeda.

Whelan told Rangers to look at their rivals and strengthen their striking options this summer.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think with a year left, Morelos is in control of the situation – Rangers aren’t.

“So they’ve got to be looking now for a striker who can have longevity at the club.

“Morelos has been around a long time. He’s been fantastic, but he’s always talked about leaving – the speculation has been constant.

“The time has probably come for him to have a change, and Rangers need the security of having a top striker at the club if that does happen. They need to look for the new Morelos.

“January might be a sign of what is to come, but they need to cover their backs this summer.

“You can never have too many options in these attacking areas, just look at Celtic.”
