Rangers told to sign Kemar Roofe replacement amid talks reveal - pundit

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Rangers to sign another striker as an upgrade on Kemar Roofe.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward insisted Rangers were crying out for another forward as they narrowly missed out on winning the Europa League in the 2021-22 season.

Midfielder Joe Aribo was forced to lead the line in the semi-finals and final and even opened the scoring against Eintracht Frankfurt in the final before the Gers lost on penalties.

The Ibrox giants have already offloaded Cedric Itten to Young Boys in his native Switzerland for a reported £1.55million.

That leaves them with Alfredo Morelos, Roofe and Fashion Sakala as the only senior players capable of playing as a centre-forward although Giovanni van Bronckhorst opted to use Sakala on the right-wing.

Rangers Review reported on Monday (13 June) that the club are still in talks over a new deal with Morelos who has a year left on his current contract.

Asked whether Rangers need a new striker, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I’d get one, yes.

“Roofe is a good player but I’d definitely bring another one with injuries and a lot of football to be played.

“They needed that extra striker during the last couple of rounds of the Europa League.

“For me, I’d definitely get one just to help because there are a lot of competitions that Rangers are in so they need more players.”

Roofe scored 16 times in 36 games across all competitions for Rangers in the 2021-22 season.

He has two years left to run on his current Ibrox contract.
