Rangers transfers: Keith Wyness updates on January signings ‘under new manager’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Rangers will only have money to spend in January if they are on track to progress in the Europa League.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed there will not be a “significant amount” to spend even with the Gers lagging behind Aberdeen and Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers are nine points adrift of their Scottish rivals at the top of the table after just 11 games.

They are well-placed to secure qualification to the knockout play-off round of the Europa League with fixtures against Nice, Tottenham, Man United and Union Saint-Gilloise to come.

Rangers revealed their accounts for the 2023-24 campaign on 29 October, showing the club’s net losses increased by £4.1million to £17.2million.

Rangers will have limited January war chest, says Wyness

Wyness insisted a potential new manager coming in at Ibrox will face an “unenviable task” for the rest of this season.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think the January business will be dictated by Europa League form.

“But even then, the cash for going through is not a significant amount.

“It could give them some leeway to get some young, foreign talent in.

“However, there’s no football head in place, no chief executive.

“There may be a little bit available if they go forward in Europe, but it’ll be someone coming in to try and revitalise a squad who have had a bad start to the season.

“It’s an unenviable task for a potential new manager coming in to Rangers.”
