Rangers vs Genk ref watch: What Matej Jug got wrong during Europa League clash
Rangers were shown up by a plucky Genk side as they lost 1-0 in their Europa League opener in front of a frustrated Ibrox crowd.
Jack Butland shone as Mohammed Diomande saw red for Rangers in their disappointing loss under the lights at the Ibrox.
Sources told Football Insider on 21 September that Rangers are working on Russell Martin replacements after a dreadful start to the season.
Football Insider exclusively revealed that Martin has until the international break to save his Rangers job with the poor result against the Belgian outfit only adding to his woes.
Matej Jug had a reasonably solid game as referee but he did miss some crucial decisions as Football Insider reveals where he went wrong.
James Tavernier wrongly denied clear handball
In the 35th minute of the clash, VAR intervened when captain James Tavernier’s header appeared to strike Joris Kayembe Ditu on the arm as it flailed in the air.
The dubious handball did happen at point blank range but the Gers had a genuine penalty shout dismissed when Jug gave a free-kick in Genk’s favour.
The right-back was adjudged to push the DR Congo international in the back which supposedly provoked the arm to come out extended.
I think the referee got this wrong with the alleged push appearing to be very soft as the Belgian side got away with a favourable call.
Mikey Moore escaped yellow card
Early on in the match the Tottenham loanee was in the Gers fans’ good books after leaving his mark on former Celtic striker Hyun-Gyu Oh.
In the 7th minute the 18-year-old won a decisive tackle in his own half but in the process caught the Korean on the shin with his studs.
The referee completely ignored the dubious tackle despite the eventual match-winner writhing around on the floor in pain.

Mikey Moore should have certainly received a yellow card for catching his opponent and I’m surprised the Slovenian official missed this.
Youssef Chermiti clumsiness dodged obvious booking
Moments before being hooked off the pitch, the Portuguese forward showed his frustrations by lashing out at one of his opponents.
Having only touched the ball 24 times in 80 minutes, the ex-Everton frontman bulldozed his way into a late tackle as his left foot clamped down on the defender’s foot right in front of the Rangers bench.
Youssef Chermiti was adjudged to have fouled Kayembe in front of Martin‘s technical area but was not branded with a yellow card.

This was a clearly careless challenge which the referee failed to pick up on as the number nine quickly trotted off the field.
