Rangers want to sign an experienced centre-back as they step up plans to complete their defensive overhaul this summer, Football Insider understands.

The Glasgow giants this afternoon announced the £700,000 capture of George Edmondson from Oldham Athletic after he rejected moves to Portsmouth and Peterborough United.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that the club want a more experienced central defender to complement the 21-year-old as well as Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic.

One player whose name has been mentioned behind the scenes is Phil Jagielka, the ex-England international who is leaving Everton when his contract expires at the end of the month.

The Premier League club announced at the start of this month that the centre-back is being released after 12 years of outstanding service.

The 36-year-old was spotted in Glasgow earlier this week, but that was reportedly for a social visit, and his wage demands are likely to push him out of Rangers’ reach.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard and recruitment chief Mark Allen are actively working on other targets who would fit within the club’s wage structure.

Gerrard is eager to have four senior centre-backs in his squad, which will be playing in four competitions again next season and could well play nearly 60 matches.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that another attacker is set to join the club after agreeing personal terms with the Light Blues.
