Rangers ‘will get what they deserve’ amid shock Russell Martin claim

Russell Martin’s Rangers reign slipped deeper into the mire as his side fell out of the Champions League, losing 9-1 on aggregate to Club Brugge.

After a disastrous 3-1 loss in the home leg, Brugge hit Rangers for six on Wednesday, angering fans and mounting serious questions over Martin’s position, following their heaviest away defeat since the 1960s.

Rangers have only won two games under Martin this season, domestically the only win has been a 4-2 win over Alloa Athletic in the Scottish League Cup, while the club have drawn all three of their first league games 1-1, against Motherwell, Dundee, and St Mirren.

Martin’s side won their opening qualifying game in the Champions League beating Viktoria Plzen 3-0, before losing 2-1 in the reverse leg of the fixture.

Yet, as pressure mounts on Martin one journalist has claimed that Rangers will “get what they deserve” from this situation.

Significant claim made over Russell Martin future

After Rangers’ disastrous start to the season the club now sit six points behind rivals Celtic, ahead of the first Old Firm derby on Sunday, a game Martin will take charge of.

Simon Jordan spoke on talkSPORT about the ex-Southampton boss: “The dye had been cast when he walked in the door.

“There was a significant section of the Rangers fanbase that were completely unaroused by this appointment and had no truck with it.

“We’ve created, we being the global media, have created a narrative around Russell Martin, that he only plays one way, and that he wasn’t able to pivot,” he continued.

“He was right to have that accusation made against him at the time with Southampton, but we don’t know whether he’s changed or not. He’s walked in there, he’s trying to implement change into a football club.

“And if you’re seriously telling me that ten games is all he gets, then Rangers will get what they deserve, which is the next manager suffering from the same malaise,” Jordan finished.

Russell Martin has to get it right at Rangers

Football Insider verdict

Having had impressive spells in charge of MK Dons and Swansea City, Martin earned himself a move to Southampton, in what many saw as a progression similar to that of Graham Potter.

Past the pair having positive managerial spells at Swansea, the similarities don’t extend far between the two, although they’re both facing torrid starts to their respective seasons.

Rangers’ results to start the season

Martin’s Southampton spell ended poorly, and his Rangers spell is heading in the same direction, leading to many questioning the 39-year-old’s tactical approach.

As the pressure mounts at Ibrox, Martin will have to turn things around at the club to not only save Rangers’ season but potentially also his own career at the top level.
