Robinson: Gerrard will only quit Rangers on one condition – and it’s nothing to do with Liverpool
Steven Gerrard would only abandon Rangers for a new project if the offer was from a team on an upwards trajectory.
That is according to Gerrard’s ex-England teammate Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after the 40-year-old sealed his first silverware with Rangers after Celtic dropped points against Dundee United on Sunday.
Speculation regarding Gerrard’s future is rife on the back of his impressive exploits with Rangers over the past three seasons.
Ex-chairman Dave King, who appointed Gerrard to his current role, squashed talk of an Ibrox exit when he told the Glasgow Times there was a “zero percent” chance of him leaving the club in the near future.
Robinson echoed King’s sentiments and insisted that Gerrard will not cut short his Rangers career unless a team on the up comes calling.
He told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs: “There is talk about Steven Gerrard potentially moving on and getting a big job in the Premier League but he will only get offered a job like that if the club is struggling.
“Why would he want to begin another rebuild now? Yes, I think he will end up at Liverpool but I cannot see it being in the near future.
“If a big job in the Premier League came up I think he would turn it down because he is on such a good thing at Rangers. For example, if a job like Arsenal came up, he would only get it if the club were struggling.
“Whereas at Rangers his stock is increasing by the day. I think he would turn a lot of Premier League clubs down right now to stay at Ibrox.”
After realising his dream of taking Rangers back to the top in the Scottish Premiership, Gerrard’s focus will now shift towards Europe.
His side face Slavia Prague in the first leg of their last-16 tie this evening.
In other news, a top pundit has hailed Rangers as a “global monster” and offered a prediction on the future of Steven Gerrard.
